SENATOR ACHONU, A STRONG ADVOCATE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY – by Chibuikem Diala

Among the Governorship Candidates in the November 11, 2023, elections in Imo State, Senator Athan Nneji Achonu is the only candidate with genuine passion and commitment to full autonomy of Local Governments in Imo State. In more than a decade, his expressed views and persistent advocacy for LGA Autonomy transcends mere ’emergency’ campaign rhetoric.

He has considerable experience and deep understanding of the role local governments should play in supporting economic development of the State, hence since 2010 (as shown in the video) he has not stopped speaking truth to power on matters that affect the grassroots. He believes development that thrives should start from bottom and nurtured to the top with relevant policies, people and purpose.

He constantly advocates the great importance and the growing need to develop local government’s all round capacity as a strategy to increase decentralisation of wealth to the masses, accelerate and improve the quality of economic growth, thereby guaranteeing better and sustainable livelihood for citizens.

Repeatedly, he says upon assumption of office, “I will conduct the freest LGA election within six months; I will never touch a dime of Local governments as they will be free to run the affairs of the council. In synergy with elected Chairmen, I will ensure we develop local economic development policies that are community specific but alligns with our state economic blueprint”

Ndi Imo, it is not in doubt that Senator Achonu will ensure accelerated growth at the grassroots. He is the leader that knows how to strengthen local government’s administrative and fiscal capacities, secure communities, build human resources and deliver uncommon dreams to become reality. Above all, he keeps to his words. He will keep to this commitment.

It’s time to get the LGAs to work again.

Let’s Take Back Imo!
